Unpaid Trial Shifts

Thank you very much for your email regarding unpaid work periods. I have a lot of sympathy with your view in any case where there is unfair exploitation.

I think that a short trial period can be beneficial for potential employees as well as potential employers, as long as it truly is just that - a short trial with the terms and any payment or expenses clearly outlined in advance. However, the exploitation of jobseekers is simply unacceptable and I’m pleased that the Government has introduced more support to identify and crack down on such unfair practices.

In addition, in response to the Matthew Taylor review, new measures will be introduced to prevent any unscrupulous employers from undercutting their employees’ wages by failing to define clearly who is employed and who isn’t. I also welcome the Government’s intention to take further action to ensure that unpaid interns aren’t doing work that ought to be carried out by a salaried employee and to require employers to set out written terms clearly from day one of the employment relationship.
